About Us
A collaboratively written colophon for #BlogClub
In the spirit of collaborative working, today we’re writing a joint “About Us” post as the output of our session on “About” pages.
#BlogClub is a weekly writing group run by London Bloggers Meetup members. This Medium publication is an opportunity for members to share the work they produce each week with a wider audience. Our list of contributors forms the content for our own about page, as we exist to serve our members. The club is open to all writers, whether you’re a rookie or an old hand. We cover a different topic each week, discussing our writing, our hangups, our tips, and getting feedback on our progress at the end of each session.
This week, we started by trying to define the “About” page. What is it for? Who is it for? Many of us feel shy speaking about ourselves: we don’t want to brag, we’re unsure what to focus on, or we’re afraid no one is listening. People often have multiple blogs, and wonder if their “About” page should be consistent across all, or tailored to each. Personal blogs may have a more chatty, informal voice, or be more centred on the individual. Business blogs can give guidance on what kind of partnerships they are open to, to help readers understand their positioning.
We all agreed that the best place to start is with a short paragraph: three or four sentences that set out what you’re trying to achieve. The most important thing is to hit “publish” — you can always edit it later!
